TOEIC

I took the TOEIC test few years ago, I still remember vividly that all the questions were not difficult but tricky. We have to answer more than one hundred questions within a time limit. When you open the web page of ETS, they said that TOEIC is the "The global standard for measuring English language skills for business." There are four parts in TOEIC tests, there are listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
However, I will not encourage studentrs take TOEIC tests. In my opinion, I felt that this kind of exam can not really exam the student's truly ability because students just need to use basic logical thinking skills then can answer the questions.

CLT

What's communicative Language Teaching?
It is a method to the teaching of second languages that focue on both the means and the ultimate goal of learning a language. In my opinion, I think that listening and speaking activities are both play important roles in CLT. I planned a course "Learning English for Study Abroad" for my students few years ago. They learned the conversation in many diffrerenty situations. They learn how to speak in the post office, they learned how to open a bank account and how to asked the bank cleark about the interest, they learned how to negotioationed with the landlord...etc.
1994 study by Lai established that learner confidence and self esteem were primary factors that led to CLT success. As a language teacher, how could you build up your students' confident ?

NCLB

The No Child Left Behind Actwas started from 2002.
NCLB is a federal law and mandated English, Math, Science at improving the U.S. education in middle and high school by
certain standards. There are some supporters and opponents of NCLB.
Supporters of NCLB agree this law because the emphasis on test results will improve the quality of public education for all students, and accountability to
educational standards.

However, opponents feel that this law hasn’t been effective and really improving education in public education, especially in high school.
The standardize testing, which forced teacher only teaches students “how to pass the exam” in class rather than “how to gain the knowledge.”
As a teacher who teaches in the United States, how to find the balance between help students pass the standardize testing and pass the knowledge?
It will be a issue that weather you are the teacher in the United States to think about.

Nagotiating a Language Policy for Malaysia

There are three main ethinc groups in Malaysia, there are Malays, indigenous, Chinese, and Indians. The Malay trying to put Englsih into Malay pre-university classes because of the prosperous of global education. Employers from multinational firms are interested in recruiting those who have professional skills and a linguistic ability to connect with the rest of the world.
However, some of nationalistic citizen think that the direct transfer of English syntactic patterns into Malay will "pollution"by grammarians and Malay English teachers. Fortunatel, the nationl leaders and language planners realize that people should chose English education tend to be benefit more than those who are not. Students in Malay should not be influenced by the attitude of the nationalistic group to the English language.

Standard English

As I read the article which was written by Michael Halliday, he said that "Whenever one language is used to describes settings that are primarily constructed in another language, it is bound to take on new meanings-as English did." Exactly, in Chinese, and in Australia all have difference ways to express "jellyfish". Every language enlarges its meanings range when it hosts translations of foreign texts or is uesd to talk about cultural contexts that are different, and distant, from its own.
